Our Client is a medical technology company developing, manufacturing, and marketing smart connected diagnostics and diagnostic-led care solutions. They have recently launched their new, innovative Platform, and are looking for proactive, experienced, focused, and enthusiastic individuals who can make a significant contribution to the continued growth and success of our dynamic and forward-looking company.

Due to their growth we are looking for a Senior Optical Engineer to join our client’s company on a permanent, full-time basis based in Stirling.

The role will be responsible for driving the development of the optical systems associated with our clients Point of Care (POC) instrument design, including fluorescence measurement based systems from the lab-based prototype stage to high volume manufacture design transfer.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Concept generation of optical sub systems, including fluorescence measurement systems, relevant to the required performance, form factor, robustness and cost criteria associated with the Instrument development activities.
  • Modelling and simulation of optical systems and associated critical to quality design consideration inputs, ouputs, design variables and tolerances.
  • Creation of detailed design specifications based on simulation, prototype testing, characterisation and product requirements.
  • Define optical performance specifications for the optical detection system, working closely with engineers  and scientists across disciplines to maximize system performance.
  • Design and execute optical experiments to demonstrate, characterise and verify the performance of optical systems including fluorescence measurement systems.
  • Analysis of experimental data of new and existing designs, and creation of associated design study reports, including application of signal measurement and processing techniques to determine and optimise system signal to noise.
  • Work across instrument development and assay development teams to resolve system performance anomalies.
  • Formulate robust calibration schemes methods appropriate for implementation as part of a high volume manufacturing system solution.
  • Work with external vendors to specify and realise both custom and off the shelf optical components.
  • Responsible for ensuring the design complies with regulatory standards.

About You:

We are looking for a highly motivated individual that can demonstrate flexibility and a can-do attitude, along with the following experience:

  • Master’s or PhD degree (preferred or equivalent experience) in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related discipline.
  • Experience working in fluorescence detection system.
  • Industry experience, or equivalent hands-on university experience, as an optical engineer.
  • Experience with designing and building complex free-space optical test setups; Collecting and analysing data from optical test setups.
  • Skilled at programming for data analysis (e.g. Matlab, Python, VBA, C/ C++).
  •  Experience with instrument control software.
  • Experience using photodiode, high power LEDs, spectrometers and CMOS camera systems.
  • Skilled in Zemax, FRED, Code V or other optical simulation software.
  • Knowledge of electronics interfacing and Electro-optics modelling experience.
