Our client is a life sciences company delivering human-focused research and discovery enabled by a unique and proven Organ-on-a-Chip platform. They are at the forefront of the rapidly growing field of human Organs-on-Chips thanks in part to being a successful co-recipient with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2012 of a $26M US Federal contract to develop the “Human Body-on-a-Chip”: a tablet sized device incorporating ten miniature interacting human organs.

The company is currently accelerating its development and commercialisation of new Organs-on-Chips and microfluidic instruments and consumables for the life sciences and laboratory instrumentation markets. We are now seeking a Bioengineer to work at the interface between our in-house product development team and biological applications development scientists, be they in-house or external (customer/collaborator) teams.



You will apply your knowledge of mechanical engineering, microfluidics and cell biology to develop, test and gain feedback on new prototypes, instruments and consumables.

You will work closely both with engineers and biologists, acting as a bridge between the disciplines.

You will develop project and experimental plans for the testing of prototypes in both engineering and cell culture laboratories. You will work with the product development team and biological scientists to ensure these experiments validate fitness for use.

You will undertake in vitro cell culture experiments to assess the functionality and performance of prototypes in support of product development. 

You will project manage outsourced partners on the development of instrumentation and prototypes ensuring they are delivering outputs which align with the product development plan are on time and on budget.

You will be involved in relationships with external partners including customers and academics. This will require you to work closely with partners to plan projects, gather feedback on prototypes/products, and deal with questions and issues as they arise.    

You will be required to deliver your findings in high quality reports and presentations. You will contribute to the writing of manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed academic journals.

You will visit customers and academic collaborators to establish and progress projects or to support the installation of devices and training of new users.  You will work with suppliers to establish supply chains. 

You will represent the company at conferences presenting scientific material in the form or posters or presentations, assisting in the delivery of workshops, and for business development purposes.. 

In this role you will report to the Director of Product Development.


Qualifications & Selection Criteria

  • Bachelors Degree/ PhD preferred, plus a minimum 2 years’ work experience in a (bio)engineering, microfluidics or medical devices role
  • Mechanical engineer, biomedical engineer or physicist with a proven track record in the development of instruments and consumables for life science or medical device applications. Most ideally these instruments will have interfaced in some manner with living cells.
  • Proven track record in a client-facing or other externally-facing role to build relationships and deliver value to clients through engineering solutions and the delivery of sub-systems or products.
  • Expertise in microfluidics and/or software would be beneficial
  • Expertise with CAD beneficial
  • Ability to perform in vitro cell culture experiments, expertise in handling primary human cells would be beneficial.
  • Ideally you will have a track record of publishing in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Good document management, organisational and administrative skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to use own initiative, working with logic and creativity to solve complex problems.
  • Proven ability to work safely, particularly with regards to the handling of biohazardous material.
  • Team player with a “can-do” attitude
