Our client is an innovative start-up medical device company who are using revolutionary biomimetic technologies to develop a range of smart bioelectronic devices that speak the same language as the human body.

These devices are used to interpret signals and generate a natural response in real-time. With five years of rigorous laboratory testing and pre-clinical evaluations already under its belt, our client’s technology has the potential to treat some of the world’s deadliest diseases.

On their behalf, we are looking for a permanent Lead Electronics Engineer to work alongside the CTO to be responsible for the designing and implementing of analogue and digital systems and subsystems.

The role is based in Bristol 3 days a week, with the remainder as remote working. Some national or international travel may be required in support of trials – including long distance travel. This is not expected to be more than 4 weeks in any year.

Due to the importance of this role, we have a significant remuneration package available.


Primary role

Responsible for designing and implementing analogue and digital systems and subsystems. These systems may include;

  • automated test rigs for the characterisation of the company’s bioelectronic devices
  • optimised bioelectronic circuit designs utilising alternative components
  • adapted/augmented designs suited to the changing needs of future trials.
  • Miniaturised custom or semi-custom implementations.
  • Evaluation boards for internal or early adopter customers of our clients' ICs/modules.


·   Significant, demonstrable, experience of full lifecycle electronic circuit realisation including system-level design, PCB layout, documentation, commissioning, debugging, testing, and support of mixed analogue/digital electronic circuits.

·   Experienced in prototyping, testing, and diagnosing fine pitch surface mounted circuits including the use of relevant test equipment such as oscilloscopes, signal generators, logic analysers, spectrum analysers, etc 

·   Experienced in the use of analogue simulation software including P-Spice / LM-Spice or similar.

·   Proficient in designing multi-layer PCBs for fine pitch surface mount components using Cadence OrCad or Allegro and with a proven record of successfully transferring designs to out-sourced PCB manufacture and population.

·   Experience of working within a formal quality process (e.g.medical, military etc.) from requirements capture through to product acceptance (Desirable, not essential)

·   Experience in biomedical engineering such as safe practice and best practice interfacing between electronics and patients, noise and interference techniques, active guarding/ shielding, Galvanic isolation, etc. (Desirable, not essential)

·   Experience of the VLSI design process from requirements capture through simulation to conformance and acceptance testing. (Desirable, not essential)   

FPGA design and implementation experience (Desirable, not essential)    



A degree in Electronics, or an equivalent professional qualification



·   Ability to work independently and safely under only general guidance from the CTO

·   Programming in Python, C, C++ on embedded devices (Desirable, not essential)

·   Ability to organise and prioritise own workload                  

·   Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact well with scientific/ technical/admin staff and medical colleagues.

·   IT skills, word processing and data analysis would be advantageous
