Working within the Research and Development Group designing, developing and introducing new products.
We require an experienced electronics engineer (minimum of 10 years) with a past record of achievement working in embedded systems coupled with a proven track record of designs working in the field.
Proven experience of:
• Technical research
• Medical - Design and Development of Medical Devices (preferred – other safety critical product exp accepted)
• Applying electronic engineering principles
• Generating ideas and selecting the best way forward according to requirements
• Problem solving
• Working in a heavily regulated and audited environment
• Developing for electrical safety

• Support the development of the manufacturing business
• Act as technical lead for electronic / firmware design and development of Products & technology according to company procedures and regulatory standards, as well as undertake necessary electronics engineering design work
• Perform technical presentations to support product development
• Create and maintain product definition information in accordance with company procedures
• Review, analyse and approve the product design
• Compile, review and approve technical documentation required by design control procedures to support the design process
• Assist with the management of work packages for new product development and product improvement projects
• Use technical and product knowledge and problem solving abilities to support and guide other team members and other departments
• To liaise and co-operate fully with management for the better performance of the department and organisation

Qualifications/ experience:
Degree or ONC/HNC in electronic engineering or equivalent. (2.1 or higher preferred)

Applied knowledge & experience of:
• Systematic approach to design of mechatronic systems with theoretical and practical understanding of interactions between mechanics, electronics and software with respect to real time control and dynamics
• Extensive use of model based design tools that include modelling of plant covering several domains (electrical, mechanical , fluid ) using Simscape , resultant simulation in simulink , design of digital controllers to optimally control the plant simulation and realisation of the controller algorithm on 32 bit microcontrollers in hardware and C code using MATLAB/Simulink embedded coders
• Life safety critical electronics & software design – including hardware redundancy, lock step microcontrollers, watchdog timers, loop back diagnostics, deterministic graceful failure modes.
• BLDC 3 phase motor control power electronics and interfacing to microcontrollers
• Digital Control system design – including Z plane implementation of PID loops, pole placement, bode design, digital compensator design
• FPGA hardware design (ideally Altera cyclone III) and programming with either VHDL or use of MATLAB HDL coder
• FPGA IP modules and soft core processors ( NIOS II )
• Microcontrollers – ideally including Microchip dsPIC33, ARM Cortex M3, Texas instruments C2000 32 bit microcontroller with a focus on optimisation for real time closed loop motor control & sensing
• Hardware Interfacing design – I2C, SPI, UART, USB, Ethernet etc
• Interfacing with various communication hardware eg CAN, FlexRay
• Sensor interfacing & signal conditioning – temperature, flow, pressure, speed, force, torque, vibration etc
• Mixed digital & analogue circuit design
• Design of ATE – ICT & FT
• Tolerancing /rating of components – passive and active
• Microprocessor & interfacing to RAM, ROM, EEPROM, IO, DMA etc ( 8 & 16 & 32 bit )
• Component selection
• Use of hardware design tools ( Ideally ORCAD )
o Schematic capture
o PCB design
o PSpice circuit simulator
• Knowledge of Industrial/medical regulations & standards and impact on software design - IEC62304
• Design of electronics PCB to meet needs of EMC, manufacturing & service
• PCB design - single, double sided, multilayer, through hole and surface mount
• Working knowledge of industrial/medical standards and impact upon hardware design including IEC60601, EMC , LVD
• Working knowledge and application of risk assessment driven and resultant DFMEA to produce robust & safe electronics.
• Working knowledge and application of V development cycle including software validation & verification
• Working knowledge of - Programmable power supplies, Oscilloscopes, Spectrum Analysers, EMC test equipment
• Solid practical skills - building electronic circuits, wiring , soldering
• Working closely with external electronics manufactures, component suppliers, EMC, LVD , 60601 test houses
• Team player being able to work in a multi-disciplined team including electronics, electrical, software , mechanical & manufacturing engineers
• Full product development lifecycle from concept to manufacturing
• Real time control system design
• RTOS based programming – eg freeRTOS, safeRTOS
• Bare metal C coding without RTOS.
• Low level programming – Assembler 8, 16, 32 bit
• Interrupt handlers & schedulers
• Combination of C and assembler for optimising speed/memory usage
• C programming - test code to exercise and run up hardware diagnostics
• Low level interfacing with Windows drivers
• Low level interfacing with Linux drivers
• Working with device drivers - I2C, SPI, UART, Ethernet, CAN
• Microsoft Office, Microsoft Project and product data management systems.
